Phoebe Deng was born to Robert and Jean Deng, a young couple, very much in love, who called Chicago their home. Robert worked for an insurance company to help provide a steady income for his family, and Jean worked as a nurse at a local hospital. Robert's mother lived with the family for the first few years, and then each summer, to help raise Phoebe while her parents were at work. There was no shortage of love in the Deng household, and none of that changed as their family grew and were later joined by one more child. Shortly after the birth of their second child, the family was given an opportunity to move to Chicago, IL, and feeling the economic crunch that came with living in New York City, they seized the opportunity. As the oldest, Phoebe demanded the center of attention, ensuring that she wasn't overshadowed by either younger sibling or forgotten about by her parents. Though she didn't particularly enjoy school, if it meant that doing well and bringing home top grades won her praise and attention, she made it happen.

Attention-seeking also meant goofing off in class. Phoebe was quick to learn that while good grades could earn praise from her parents and teachers, her peers didn't care if she brought home a report card full of As. And so she became the class clown, making her friends laugh, sometimes at the expense of the classroom. Letters home from teachers and phone calls from the principal weren't an uncommon occurrence, and while it wasn't exactly a point of pride for the Aguirres, they took solace in the fact that Phoebe's shenanigans were almost always seemingly harmless. She continued to do well in school without much effort and seemed to be shaping up into a good kid...until puberty hit. Hormones got the best of her and her behavior began to change, as did the way she saw the world around her. None of it was helped by the fact that her parents' loving marriage had seemed to crumble in recent years, and in the middle of seventh grade, Robert and Jean announced that they would be separating. It was decided that the kids would remain in Chicago with their father for the remainder of the school year, and that by summer, they would join their mother in San Jose, California, where she had decided to move to so that she could be near family of her own.

By the time eighth grade rolled around, the loud, older child had toned herself down in favor of flying under the radar rather than draw any extra attention to herself. She was the new kid in a sea of teenagers who had known each other for years, and she clung to her younger sibling for security. Without her usual shenanigans, she found that she genuinely enjoyed learning and struggled to find a balance between schoolwork, of which she had a lot, and a social life, of which she lacked. The latter didn't bother her as much, though her mother saw it differently, especially upon hearing that Phoebe was thought to be one of the weird kids in the delicate middle school ecosystem. Taking matters into her own hands, Jean insisted that Phoebe pick up various extracurricular activities, hoping that she could shed the unwanted labels of 'loner' and 'new kid' that had been bestowed upon her. Jean's strategy seemed to work, and soon, Phoebe's long list of extracurriculars began to rival that of her much popular younger sibling's. She made made more than enough friends and got into the usual teenage mischief (including hiding out in a tree to avoid getting arrested after a party was busted, but that was just a one-time thing).

By the time Phoebe hit 10th grade, a brilliant art teacher with an eye for skill and talent noted her aptitude for visual arts and took her under her wing. Though most parents didn't perceive art as something that would lead to successful livelihood, Jean was just happy to see her eldest daughter making the best of a tough situation. With much encouragement and mentoring, Phoebe was admitted to the California College of the Arts in nearby Oakland, California. Making the move across town was more exciting than she thought it would be. Phoebe's freshman class was like most others: bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, eager to take on the world.

Four years of art school flew by and Phoebe flourished in her time at CCA. By her senior year, she was awarded an animation internship at Pixar Animation Studios, where she was also offered a job at graduation. Ten years later, she remains at Pixar as a character animator while she helps care for her now elderly parents.
